Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a lot more than random scrawling; it’s an art form in itself. This process of giving form to symbols in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner is an ancient and important tradition that says as much about history and culture as a beautiful building can. Doing a nightcourse will not only teach you technique but will enrich your knowledge of world customs.
There are many different kinds of calligraphy; all with specialist features and individual idiosyncrasies; Western, East Asian, Indian and Nepalese to name just a few. Western Calligraphy is recognisable by the use of Roman alphabet; the first of which appeared around 600 BC. Another special feature of this style is the illumination of the first letter in each book or letter or a decorative carpet page that precedes this; reflected in the Lindisfarne Gospels 715-720 AD. This form of calligraphy has very strict rules and shapes; there must be rhythm and regularity to the letters and a precise stroke order. The irregularities the characters size, style and colour add meaning; and although this variation can sometimes render the content completely illegible it loses no significance as a result. Many of these themes and variations of Western Calligraphy are apparent in the Saint John’s Bible.
Calligraphy is widely respected and highly esteemed in all parts of the world. It is seen as the most refined form of East Asian painting, in Tibetan culture it is expected that the nobles are capable calligraphers as Buddhism places a great deal of significance on the written word.
Potential calligraphers won’t have to spend much in start-up costs; the principal tools for calligraphers are the pen (flat or round-nibbed) and the brush. Students who take calligraphy classes learn how to juxtapose creativity with attention to detail; in order to create something beautiful and exact. For cynics who think it is a dying tradition, consider all the many avenues through which calligraphers can pursue profit. Designing invitations, restaurant menus, business cards and posters is a modern venture and one that gives valuable returns. Plus you can already write; so why not go that extra mile? Just think how impressed the object of your desire will be when you take down their phone number…
